Celebrating Women’s History: The Legacy and Impact of the Scarsdale Women’s Exchange

The Scarsdale Women’s Exchange has been a cornerstone of our community since 1931, combining history, craftsmanship, and charity. A nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers, it provides a platform for talented artisans to achieve economic independence through the sale of their handcrafted goods. Operating under the guiding principle of “helping others to help themselves,” the Exchange has expanded its offerings over the years to include a substantial selection of commercially sourced goods, increasing its ability to support charities while ensuring a diverse and appealing shopping experience for today’s consumers.

Part of a National Movement

As a proud member of the Federation of Women’s Exchanges, the Scarsdale Women’s Exchange is part of a network of 20 organizations across 12 states dedicated to supporting women through consignment opportunities. This movement originated in 1832 with the Philadelphia Ladies’ Depository, offering women a discreet way to sell home-produced goods. By the early 20th century, over 100 Exchanges had been established. While only 15 remain in the Federation today, their mission continues to thrive, promoting economic stability and supporting local causes.

Local Roots, Community Impact

Born during the Great Depression, the Exchange provided an essential resource for women seeking to supplement their family incomes by selling handmade items and baked goods. Since its establishment in Scarsdale, the Exchange has maintained its commitment to assisting women in surrounding towns by providing a venue to sell their handcrafted items. The original location in the gatehouse near the Chateau set the stage for nearly a century of service and community engagement. Today, the Exchange continues to give back by making donations to local organizations, strengthening the bonds of our community.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Scarsdale Women’s Exchange thrives thanks to the dedication of volunteers. During the challenges of the pandemic, the Exchange faced significant financial strain, highlighting the importance of community involvement. Volunteers, particularly those with skills in social media management and website design, are essential to the Exchange’s future growth and outreach. Whether you have a few hours to spare or specific expertise to share, your time and talents can make a meaningful impact.

Handcrafted, Commercially Sourced, and Personalized

What sets the Scarsdale Women’s Exchange apart is its carefully curated selection of products. While it remains committed to showcasing handmade, customizable items crafted with care, it also carries a substantial range of commercially sourced goods. This combination not only ensures that shoppers can find everything from one-of-a-kind artisanal pieces to widely loved and trusted products but also expands the Exchange’s ability to support charitable initiatives, making it a go-to destination for all kinds of gifts and home essentials.
